Before the war

ARKIVET was inagurated as a State Archive in Kristiansand on March 8, 1935. The brick building in Vesterveien 4 is in a residential area on Bellevue just outside Kristiansand city center.

When the Germans arrived in 1940, the State Archives was an exciting house because it was a substantial building with thick brick walls and many rooms and floors. Overlooking the entrance to Kristiansand, the building had a central location.
